HFT Gough has a strong reputation and is one of the largest and longest established Solicitors in Whitehaven. Our History

There has been a firm of solicitors practising law at 42 Lowther Street since the 1930’s.

Hubert Frederick Thomas Gough joined the firm know as Chapman and Baxter in 1933 as a newly qualified solicitor for the princely sum of £200 per annum.

Messrs Chapman, Baxter and Gough continued to develop the firm with the assistance of Olive Bouch who assisted in their absence during the war and who qualified as a Legal Executive in 1965. The firm was incorporated on the 25/6/1962 as HFT Gough & Co with Hubert Frederick Thomas Gough as the Senior partner and he was succeeded by his son William Federick Gough who continued in partnership with Adrian Harrison Walker and John Christopher Taylor.  The Coroner’s Office also operated from the premises until 2011.

The firm is friendly and approachable and provides a nurturing environment for it’s people. The firm provides training and a supportive environment to enable people to grow and progress in their roles within the firm.
